Gemstone Geometry: Facilitating Mathematics Exploration With Manipulatives

Presented by Margarita Azbel and Yana Mohanty

Gemstones provide us with beautiful examples of mathematics in action. Their highly symmetric shapes—pyramids, prisms, octahedra-- are designed to maximize brilliance. In this workshop, we will construct models of geometric “gems” and challenge participants to explore their mathematical properties. You will also get to hear a student volunteer perspective on working as a facilitator in this type of exploration.

Learning through Geocaching

Presented by Michelle Whipple
