Award for Creative Teaching:
FLAG established this award to recognize teachers of the gifted that construct creative learning environments in which students and teachers alike explore, imagine and engage in a variety of thought provoking experiences. Application period for 2017 will open on March 14, 2017, and run through June 30, 2017.

2015 Award Recipient
Steffanie Grotz, Inverness Middle School, Floral City
As a 6th-8th grade Reading and English teacher Steffanie Grotz provides enrichment opportunities for gifted students at Inverness Middle School in Citrus County.
Recommendation letters from administrators, educators, parents, and former students all emphasized that Ms. Grotz is imaginative, creative, and inspiring.
She is recognized for the importance of infusing multiple perspectives into instruction as a way of fostering enhanced critical and creative thinking.
2014 Award Recipient
Matthew Peterson, Jacksonville
Matthew Peterson, a Math teacher and Head Girl's Swim Team Coach at
James Weldon Johnson College Preparatory School, incorporates Paideia
seminars into his classroom where he came up with a format
and grading system for students to take quizzes using the Paideia
"Gifted students often need teachers who think outside of the box to create instructional strategies that best meet their needs", stated Brett Hartley, Assistant Principal of Curriculum.
Past Award Recipients
As a grades K-5 teacher Zehra Lakhani provides enrichment opportunities for gifted students at three different schools; Pinellas Central Elementary, Skyview Elementary, and Cross Bayou Elementary in Pinellas Park.
She supports her students using the EEL method, a term she created which stands for E- Exposure, E- Engagement, and L- Love.
Recommendation letters from principals, parents, and students all emphasized that Ms. Lakhari is imaginative, creative, and inspiring.
However, the one word that best described her teaching style is enthusiastic. "Her teaching style and enthusiasm aids her students in their quest to reveal and release their exceptional talents", stated Ms. Rentz, School Counselor.
